SKEET! I’m with you bro. Shwayze and I also got up, i mean stayed up, to drive down from Park City in a blizzard at 4am to make our possibly snowed in 6am flight to Miami. PROBLEM #1: MIDDLE SEAT!! Ewwwwww! PROBLEM 2: It looks like Fargo outside and nobody at the fucking airport will give me a straight answer about the fate of my travel plans.
So we get on the plane and I am sitting in front of the loudest, most obnauxious family ever! I finally had to look back at them and tell them to SHUT IT for five minutes. I am usually not that dude but this was reDICK! So I settle into my miniature seat and flip the little neck supporters into position and pass out after being up since 9am the day before. PROBLEM #3: I fall asleep for two hours only to wake up still on the runway only now we are stuck in the snow and various work mobiles try to free us from the snowbank. ALl I want at this point is to get off the friggin’ plane and head back up to the warmth of our gorgeous lodge and the gorgeous girls that were frequenting it all week. Just as I am dreaming of a shotgun to blow away the family behind m,e and then take my own life the captain comes on and tells us we are freed and ready to take off! Yiipppeee-friiggin-doooo! I wanna go home already. Well, enough of that negativity…lets talk Sundance.
This was my second Sundance experience. I produced an independent feature film called Sweetie Pie, starring Jake Hoffman and get this, Paris Hilton. It was in the edgy NO-DANCE FESTIVAL a few years back. Its a classic believe me. hahahaha! I ams till in a lawsuit with Palm Pictures because they owe me 50,000 dollars!! So chances are you won’t find it on AMAZON.com or at your local video spot.
So basically this was my first real Sundance experience and we packed in so much shit that my three days in lil old PARK CITY felt like a tour of duty in NAM! The first night we got in we checked into our lodge, which was SICK!!!!! 2 bedroom sprawling love den with a gourmet kitchen and a jacuzzi on the porch which was steaming as we walked in. From there we went around to all the “gifting” suites and walked away with 6 pairs of shoes, a couple jackets, a diamond watch, and other things i dont really need. But if they were handing out free cheese on the corner we probably would’ve taken our picture with it and got a lifetime supply of cheddar. That night we headed over to STEREO and played a set with DJ AM, STEVE AOKI and DIRT NASTY. After that we took off up the mountain to the GREEN DOOR MANSION. Skeet described it pretty damn accurately. They had a VIP only “DOM PERIGNON ROOM” loaded with endless bottles of Dom P. Shwayze and I both had a bottle in each hand for the remainder of the night after discovering this. The party was so fucking crowded it was like a 30,000 sq. ft. ant farm full of scenesters and schmoozies. We decided to break out and head to the BUTTER HOUSE. The place was very hard to find and after riding around aimlessly with people who didnt know where we were going I spotted a lone cab on the side of the road and was pleasantly surprised to find the homie NAVIN CHITANI in the back seat on the phone getting the exact directions to butter. BUTTER was actually the most fun we had that night. AM was on the wheels of squeal and everybody was dancin like it was 1999…or in DIRT NASTY’s case 1980! I met up with a tall, blonde beauty and took off out the door back down the hill to the comforts of our lodge. What happened next is what happened next.
The next day we woke up and went down into town to grab some breakfast. We met up with JORDAN(our manager and label head) and CAT LAKE from Suretone. Did a little gifting before realizing I was too tired to get free stuff! That is so snobby! But really I had been up since 4am the day before in order to catch our usual 6am out of LA. That morning DONOVAN LEITCH hit me up and asked if I wanted to do a song with SUPER-COVER-GROUP “CAMP FREDDY.” I was asked to do Paul Rodgers classic “ALL RIGHT NOW” with Billy Duffy, Billy Morrison, MAtt Sorum, and Chris Chaney. These dudes are all legends and they have asked me to rock it once before with them adn it is always both a trip and an honor. When ur rythm section is from Janes Addiction and Guns n Roses you feel kind of dope! ahahahha So I dipped down to soundcheck and ran through the song a few times. None of us had ever played it but hey…were professionals. Then we went home and took a quick nap. Woke up a bit later and Paris hit me up and invited all of us to her dinner party at the TURNING LEAF lounge. It was a cool little cocktail party with some good conversation and and some pretty women to take my mind off of the fact that tight jeans are not so condusive to the wearing of long underwear. After that we dipped up to TAO at HARRY O’s with Paris and crew to watch 50 cent. He was running late and the place was so stupidly crowded that we headed out and down to HYDE LOUNGE and TENJUNE for the Camp Freddy show. The place was packed and the show went off without a hitch. Ill post some pics as i find them. After that we went next door and listened to the homie FRANKIE spin till about 4am. Again, it was a good dance party with good music so it was the best part of the night. DANCE = FUN! Then I ran into the three sisters SKEET mentioned above and took em back to the crib. What happened next is what happened next.
The next day we woke up and I got a call from the GREEN DOOR peeps that we could rock the after party. I told em the other night that it would be a sick place for a secret show and they worked it out! We were to go on at 2am. Our plane was at 6am.
After waking up and laying around for a bit we headed over to the myspace lounge to meet up with TED and MATTY O. We had a burger and some chili and took off towards the ESPN/ALLIANCE party to watch the football games. Ran into METHOD MAN who came up and said what up before we got up to bounce back to the crib and nap…and HYDRATE! MATTY O invited us to a dope little dinner called “CHEF DANCE” where every night of Sundance they have a different world class chef cook for a select group of industry and entertainment peeps. We hung with Scott Gerber and BRUNO! of the Gerber Group who are bringin us out to play SUPERBOWL WEEKEND in Scottsdale, AZ in a few weeks. We ran into and chatted up Paul Oakenfold who happens to be the coolest dude Ive ever met and one hell of a comedian as well. After the meal it was upstairs to TAO again for the VELVET REVOLVER show. Literally as I walk in I get a call from DONOVAN saying Scott Weiland missed his flight and the guys wanted to know if I could fill in. WHAT??????????? The friggin answer is YES! Next thing I know Im backstage with DUFF, SLASH, MATT SORUM and the boys learnibng some tunes that Im gonna have to rock out for the sold out crowd waiting for VELVET FUCKING REVOLVER. The funny thing is I was never even one bit nervous. The stage is my home and the fact that my heroes just asked me to front the band for the evening(3 songs) was a dream come true but also a chance for me to show these motherfuckers that I can handle-randal. Most people know me for the wrong reasons and have no idea that I have actual talent…let alone the “BALLS” to rock out in front of thousands of people with the greatest rock n rollers of our day after a 10 minute cramming session to learn the tunes. I sang ROCK N ROLL by ZEPELLIN, FEEL LIKE MAKIN LOVE by KID ROCK, and held down the back ups on HONKY TONK WOMAN. Look left and SLASH is ripping hall of fame solos and behind me GUNS N ROSES actual rythm section is rolling and rumbling like thunder through my chest. I may not have made it yet…but I definitely have arrived! hahah I cannot wait to see the pictures!!!! We took a band shot to which is gonna be classic! I finished up the set, said goodbye to my new bandmates, and rushed outside where we had two HUMMERS waiting to take us up to the GREEN DOOR MANSION for our secret performance. The place was rockin as usual and Shwayze and I got up and ran through four or five songs and even had our homie PITTSBURGH SLIM get up and rock his hit “GIRLS KISS GIRLS.” The place had a great vibe and it was hard to leave all the beautiful women knowing that we were probably going to sit in the airport watching the weather while everyone else sipped DOM P and lounged in the high grade park city snow…AND WHAT HAPPENED NEXT IS RIGHT NOW. Ill hit you from MIAMI…if I ever get there.
………………SO LONG SUNDANCE!
p.s. a huge thank you to ROB and ALLIANCE LUXURY TRANSPORTATION for running us around the whole weekend. And to the RED STAG LODGE for puttin us up. And to all the party people for having a great time and making SUNDANCE 08 a time to remember. SEE YOU NEXT YEAR YA’LL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
