“The Serena Also Rises”
I’ll be honest I haven’t even watched this episode yet… Life is getting too crazy again, maybe i’ll watch tonight in the hotel. I’m in the studio now in New Orleans recording some new Shwayze stuff and finishing remixes for “Lex Lutha” and “Samuel”.
Is Gossip Girl getting better? Should I be watching 90210? I heard 90210 is all hipstered out playing Black Kids remixes and shit… Dont know how i feel about that.
So tonight Katy P and I went to dinner at La Poubelle.
I had just gotten out of my “1940s movie star” themed photo shoot for LA weekly and she had just gotten out of her shoot for Blender. The people at my shoot decided to straighten my hair and part it, yes you read that right… wait till you see the pictures EPIC. Anyways Katy was dressed in her normal “vintage fashion icon” attire but still had all her fancy makeup on from the shoot, basically we looked like some 1940s pimp and his hooker haha.
We got a bunch of confused stares, had some food, talked about significant others, warped tour, and other normal stuff when out of nowhere this MMA fight comes on TV at the bar. It was some league called EXC which actually had my childhood friend Rob Lawler fighting on the undercard. That in itself was awesome but OUT OF NOWHERE big KIMBO THE PEOPLES CHAMP comes on the screen and they’re hyping him as the main fight. I make katy eat slowly and order coffee, I explain to her the sheer power that is Kimbo and she gets all giggly when she sees his gold grillin mugggggg.
Then James Thompson the guy he’s fighting comes out with gnarliest cauliflower ear in the history of sport. I had to describe to Katy how all that fluid and tissue had gotten in his ear and she was grossed out already, but she kept watching. As the fight started the whole place started to watch the TVs, Kimbo has that effect on people. Kimbo started out strong but you could tell he was nervous and got gassed quick. It looked like the Super Bowl when all the guys come out so amped on adrenaline that they get exhausted SUPER quick. But it’s expected since he’s still really new to this much attention. Anyways Kimbo landed a few good punches but needs some work on his ground game for realllllll. The other guy JT was big as fuck and Kimbo had trouble with his size in the first two rounds for sure.
One thing lead to another and by the 3rd round Katy was all grossed out and couldn’t watch, that ended up being a smart move because both of the fighters were EXHAUSTED. Kimbo was probably gonna knock JT out but before he could he caught JT with a hook to the CAULIFLOWER EAR OF MY NIGHTMARES and the fucker EXPLODED. Blood all over his dome piece, the fight probably could have gone on and JT would have gotten knocked out. But it was stopped and Kimbo won. Kimbo’s 3-0 and still a beast, but not a legend. Needs a lot of work for him to be a legend.

Was a fun night even though Katy couldn’t watch the whole thing. She’s soft, i’m gonna force her to watch UFC dvds on warped tour. Get her toughened up, beating other pop starlets up outside of teddys and shit.

At the age of 40, King Gillette was a frustrated inventor, a bitter anticapitalist, and a salesman of cork-lined bottle caps. It was 1895, and despite ideas, energy, and wealthy parents, he had little to show for his work. He blamed the evils of market competition. Indeed, the previous year he had published a book, The Human Drift, which argued that all industry should be taken over by a single corporation owned by the public and that millions of Americans should live in a giant city called Metropolis powered by Niagara Falls. His boss at the bottle cap company, meanwhile, had just one piece of advice: Invent something people use and throw away.
One day, while he was shaving with a straight razor that was so worn it could no longer be sharpened, the idea came to him. What if the blade could be made of a thin metal strip? Rather than spending time maintaining the blades, men could simply discard them when they became dull. A few years of metallurgy experimentation later, the disposable-blade safety razor was born. But it didn’t take off immediately. In its first year, 1903, Gillette sold a total of 51 razors and 168 blades. Over the next two decades, he tried every marketing gimmick he could think of. He put his own face on the package, making him both legendary and, some people believed, fictional. He sold millions of razors to the Army at a steep discount, hoping the habits soldiers developed at war would carry over to peacetime. He sold razors in bulk to banks so they could give them away with new deposits (“shave and save” campaigns). Razors were bundled with everything from Wrigley’s gum to packets of coffee, tea, spices, and marshmallows. The freebies helped to sell those products, but the tactic helped Gillette even more. By giving away the razors, which were useless by themselves, he was creating demand for disposable blades. A few billion blades later, this business model is now the foundation of entire industries: Give away the cell phone, sell the monthly plan; make the videogame console cheap and sell expensive games; install fancy coffeemakers in offices at no charge so you can sell managers expensive coffee sachets.
Thanks to Gillette, the idea that you can make money by giving something away is no longer radical. But until recently, practically everything “free” was really just the result of what economists would call a cross-subsidy: You’d get one thing free if you bought another, or you’d get a product free only if you paid for a service.
Over the past decade, however, a different sort of free has emerged. The new model is based not on cross-subsidies — the shifting of costs from one product to another — but on the fact that the cost of products themselves is falling fast. It’s as if the price of steel had dropped so close to zero that King Gillette could give away both razor and blade, and make his money on something else entirely. (Shaving cream?)
