The Urban Outfitters brand is a bastion of liberal freedoms. The products sold in its stores can be irreverent, quirky, and on the the cutting edge. This brand reputation is how they have distinguished themselves in the marketplace.

An interesting article from ThisIsMoney, suggests that there’s a gap between the liberal brand reputation which Urban Outfitters has established, and the conservative viewpoints of its corporate company.

“Urban Outfitters is a triumph of marketing – a hugely successful business that has disguised the gap between what it is and what its customers suppose it to be.”

From ThisIsMoney:

It seems unlikely that many of the staff or the customers know much about the owner and boss of Urban – a brilliant retailer called Richard Hayne whose views would be a serious risk to sales were his profile to rise.

Hayne started the business in the 1970s, taking it public in 1993 and bringing it to Britain in 1998. He is still the biggest shareholder and a seriously rich man – a billionaire by some estimates. You only have to look to see that there is nothing remotely hip about him. There is surely a bigger gulf between Hayne and his customer base than any other High Street retailer.

Shopping in Urban makes you feel like you are somewhere radically Left-wing, an antidote to the corporate blandness of The Gap. But Hayne is a stanch conservative who donates money to Republican politicians, not least Rick Santorum, a now failed Senator whose views on homosexuality are both bizarre and old-fashioned.

Hayne doesn’t give many interviews precisely because he’s afraid that college slackers who get to know him will suddenly realise that buying his clothes is like giving cash to George Bush. -Link.

We were asked to do a mix for The Crystal Method’s Radio show on Indie 103.1 but I went a bit too housey/progressive with it towards the end and decided to make a new one for them.. this is the version that isnt going to air. Download by clicking on the image below. After the show airs I will post up the other version.. which is straight m-u-r-d-e-r!

Here’s a video of Jay-Z performing “karaoke” version of Oasis’s “Wonderwall” at the Glastonbury 2008 Music Festival over the weekend. Here’s the background on it for those that don’t know of the Jay-Z vs. Oasis Feud from the Times UK:

In the event, Jay-Z at Glastonbury 2008 proved to be the most thrilling headline act for more than a decade. We should have known that the artist, who retired briefly from making music in 2003 because there was nothing new left to achieve, would relish this sort of challenge.

A video montage chronicling the furore that had led up to this most controversial of bookings began with Noel Gallagher piously proclaiming: “Sorry, but Jay-Z, I’m not f***ing having him at Glastonbury.” Then came Jay-Z, contemptuously miming Wonderwall while strumming a guitar. Finally, an explosion of hip-hop beats heralded 99 Problems. With his biggest hit behind him, he declared: “My name is Jay-Z and I’m pretty f***ing awesome.” He made light work of proving it with the elastic funk of I Know What Girls Like.

So our label, Fools Gold, just released the Kid Sister Remix EP on vinyl. Here’s the review from Turntable Lab: This one deserves the… hooooooly chit! A-Trak and Catch called in the big guns for this vinyl-only EP featuring four brand new remixes of Kid Sis’ finest cuts to date, “Control” and “Pro Nails.” Remixes by whom, you ask? Hows about SMD (aka Simian Mobile Disco), JFK of MSTRKRFT, newly-inked Fool’s Gold’ers LA Riots, and the juke icon himself DJ Gant-Man. I gotta say, Simian steal the show with their remix of “Pro Nails(1),” even though it’s more of a cover version and doesn’t even feature any Kid Sis vocals! Instead, SMD re-imagine the track as a slow rolling, dubstep-flavored heater and the results are entrancing. Gant-Man’s excellent jacking club mix(2) gets a reprise too, and that one’s got nuff Kid Sis vocal chops. Flip it over for a pair of cracking “Control” mixes: JFK’s raved out banger(3) and LA Riots bassy 4×4 take(4). Now that’s bang for your buck. Comes in a stickered Fool’s Gold jacket. Recommended.

Been on the road for a few weeks and miss LA so much.. thankfully I’m home for a few days next week. Im in Toronto right now to play this massive party at The Guvernment for Canada Day. Lineup is pretty crazy with Laidback Luke, Dubfire (of Deep Dish), Steve Lawler, Shy FX, DJ SS, Kill The Noise, Klever, Treasure Fingers and a lot more.. if you’re anywhere in the area try and make it.

In other news.. I finally caved and started using Facebook. Find me here.

THIS is the picture that will shock parents around the world – a baby born with a second penis on his BACK. The tot was born to farmer dad Li Jun, 30, and his unnamed wife, who live in Hejian city in central China’s Henan province.

But he was rushed to Tianjin Childrens’ Hospital on May 27 for surgery to remove his extra manhood.

The rare condition, the first for Tianjin Childrens’ Hospital, is called fetus in fetu (FIF).

Doctors, who spent over three hours removing the extra penis on June 6, said he was fine following surgery.
