First and foremost. I don’t know shit about cars. I have a car, but I ride Mopeds and Bikes 90% of the time. If I have DJ gigs far away I take my car, but seriously I don’t like cars.
Anyways my car is on it’s last legs and I think it’s time to step it up. I need your help loyal readers. I’ve been thinking… And I def wanna do something eco friendly, but I also want something aesthetically cool. What are the cons on Bio-Diesel stuff? I’m figuring in LA i can find a costco in every hood. But is a Prius a better idea? I’m thinking prius might be, I kinda wanna just buy a car cash and not have car payments so i’m leaning towards not a prius. But it might make more sense down the road? I don’t even know.
have any good ideas? What do you envision senor skeet in? taco truck would be so ill.

biodiesel emits a lot of nitrogen oxide, but if a hybrid fucks up, it costs a lot to fix it or replace something. it really depends on whether you want to be extremely ecofriendly or just a little and how much your willing to pay.

I guess I’d say consider the amount of time you’d be driving your car and how much luggage space you have heavily, because you might not notice as much of a difference in cost of gas if you only use your car for dj sets.

Subaru WRX Wagon circa 2004. Taken well enough care of it will last for 300,000 miles. You can fold the seats down and have no problem sleeping in it. Looks good. Rides great. Ultimate road trip vehicle. Relatively eco-friendly. Fast and fun.

biodiesel may lead to deforestation to make land available for biodiesel monoculture crops… and you still need oil to process the stuff.
I don’t know much about cars, but the hybrid seems decent enough.
Actually bio-fuel sucks; it’s HUGELY responsible for food inflation the world over.
It has made rice and corn unaffordable for people in countries where they have to exist almost exclusively on rice and corn. Since it’s made from canola (aka corn oil) people think it’s very environmentally sound but in fact it polutes almost as much as anything else.
If you can afford it (and if it’s an option I assume you can) get a hybrid!

If you’re doing it for the environment and all, dont buy a car thats using biodiesel. Biofuels arent exactly eco-friendly, or make people in 3rd world countries very happy.
If its about the environment, get a Prius, if you just want a cool car, get a regular one.
If you buy a hybrid (and get something besides a Prius) you get a tax credit for it… you could get back up to $3000.

Skeet, I am with you on being a car-hater. By the end of 2007, I was only driving a car once a month. I did the math, and between insurance and the cost of parking a car in Hollywood, I could rent a car 5 times a month and STILL save money.
So, I gave my car to charity (it was, like yours, on it’s last legs), banked the tax deduction, and now if I ever need to go someplace far, far away, I rent a car. Or I bike more. I can get from Venice Beach to Hollywood in an hour. That’s not much worse than you would do going by car…
So, go for option D, NO CAR!
Also, sit tight on the bio-diesel thing. That’s some expensive shit right now! And with food prices rising faster than fuel prices, I can’t forsee bio-diesel becoming a more efficient option, and it leavs a larger carbon footprint than traditional gasoline.
there are a lot of things to consider. i was first going to mention the cost of bio diesel, but that was done for me. that would suck bro, that would suck a lot. thus the prius would look like a better option, ONLY theres the whole cost thing but also yea its fucking like made out of tin foil and i swear any accident and that thing is bashed.
however, im not gunna lie id go prius. for sure the least sick of the three (if you want the truth i could see you in A for sure for some reason and yea B but like thats any cool guys car, you cuold really pull off A which makes you even cooler) BUT i would rather worry about a car payment every month than spending like 75 bucks every time you fill up (let me tell you, i spend more than that and its not cool)

Now I’ll set out the math to show why hybrids aren’t going to save you money.
I’ll use the Prius as an example which has the best gas mileage of currently available hybrids(all of my numbers are taken from the Toyota website).
If you buy a Prius, the MSRP is $21,100 (base model). You have a 1.5L engine that gets 48 mpg city and 45 mpg highway.
The average driver does about 45% highway driving, 55% city driving, and drives an average of 1,000 miles per month. That requires 21.5 gallons of gas.
Right now regular gasoline is currently at $3.79/gallon where I live. That would mean you would be paying an average of $81.33 per month in gas. However, we know that gas prices will continue to rise, even if they drop first in the short term. If gas went to, say, $4.50/gallon, then now you’re paying $96.56 per month on average. I bet that looks pretty good to a lot of people reading this.
And how much does this car cost you? Well, even though the MSRP is $21,100, you know that you can negotiate with the dealership and you’ll probably get about 10% off. So now it costs you $19,089.
What about hybrid tax credits? Don’t count on one. Hybrid tax credits fade away as a manufacturer makes more hybrids and disappear altogether after 60,000 vehicles. You can still get a decent tax credit on a Ford hybrid (up to $3000), but there is barely anything left for GM, Nissan, and Honda, and absolutely no tax credit on Toyotas anymore. http://www.fueleconomy.gov...
If you have pretty good credit, you can finance your Prius through Toyota at 8.2%. If you do that for 60 months (and you don’t want to ever finance a car for a longer term than that or you’ll certainly be owing more than it’s worth) then your payment will be $389/month. Also the insurance: (in my case 30 yr old male in Anchorage, AK, married, homeowner, no accidents or violations in the past three years, minimum required coverages on a financed car) $204.88/month through Progressive.
So in conclusion, a 2008 Prius will cost you the payment of $389/month + $96.56/month in gas + $204.88/month insurance payment
Total = $690.44/month (We’ll exclude maintenance costs)
We sure pay a lot to drive. Thanks for staying with me for this long. Next I’ll compare the costs of a comparably sized non-hybrid Toyota: the Corolla.
So the MSRP on a 2008 4 speed automatic Corolla (base) is $16,050. It has 92 ft3 of passenger volume compared to the 96.2 ft3 of the Prius. You also have a 1.8L engine which provides more horsepower than the Prius and gets 26 mpg city and 35 mpg highway. (The manual gets 28 and 37, but most people would prefer the automatic).
The same mileage calculations means that you will need 34 gallons of gas each month on average. Right now that is $128.86/month ($3.79/gallon), but at $4.50/gallon you would spend $153.05/month in fuel.
To calculate payment, let’s once again reduce the MSRP by 10% which gets us $14,445. At the same financing terms you’ll have a payment of $294/month or $274/month if you have $1000 for a down payment or some equity in a trade.
Your insurance, using the same criteria as above, would be $193.38/month.
So now your totals for the Corolla (with gas at $4.50/gallon and no money down at purchase) is a car payment of $294/month + $153.05/month in gas + $193.38/month insurance payment
Total = $640.43/month.
By choosing the hybrid, you would have increased your expenses by $50 per month! You can save about $60 per month in gas, and that may make you feel like you are saving money, but looking at the big picture shows you the opposite.
Don’t go for the bio-diesel fuel option. There’s a world wide food shortage happening right now that’s worsening by the day. What little food is being grown by farmers should be feeding people not cars.

I don’t know where all of you live but where I live gas is at about 5 dollars a gallon so it doesn’t really matter which fuel choice you go with.
